Kerala Faces Power Restrictions Till June 30 Due to El Nino and Supply Shortage

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has announced the reintroduction of power restrictions across the state until June 30. Consumers will face moderate power cuts between 6:00 PM and 12:00 AM (midnight) due to a severe power shortage of approximately 900 MW, triggered by the El Niño phenomenon and a drop in power availability from the national power exchange.

According to KSEB, the high temperatures caused by the El Niño effect in the Pacific Ocean, combined with surging electricity demand, have severely strained the power grid. Although the monsoon has arrived in Kerala, the rains have not been strong enough to cool temperatures, pushing the peak demand up to 4,900 MW and increasing daily consumption by 10 million units. Additionally, Kerala is obligated to return the electricity it borrowed from other states during March and April starting from June 16, further exacerbating the deficit.

To address the crisis, a high-level meeting was chaired by Electricity Minister Sunny Joseph, who directed officials to secure maximum power through daily short-term contracts. KSEB has been authorized to implement necessary load-shedding measures to maintain grid stability if the shortage worsens. Minor restrictions were already imposed in several parts of the state on the night of June 16, and KSEB warned that these temporary power cuts are likely to continue in the coming days.
