Spiritual Warnings and Bad Omens Associated with Animals in the Month of Mithunam

Traditional astrological beliefs in Kerala highlight that the appearance of certain animals in and around homes during the Malayalam month of Mithunam (mid-June to mid-July) can serve as warnings of impending crises or misfortunes. According to spiritual practices, these creatures act as messengers indicating potential dangers to the lives and well-being of family members, necessitating immediate remedial actions to ward off negative energies.

Several specific animals and their unusual behaviors are identified as carriers of these warning signs. For instance, an owl continuously hooting from the southern side of a house, finding a dead lizard or having one fall on your face, and seeing crickets or black cats entering the house unexpectedly are considered highly inauspicious. Other signs include three or more crows crying together from the south—which is believed to portend danger to the oldest or youngest family member—finding dead frogs or rats, and encountering dark-colored snakes or black beetles in groups.

To counteract these negative omens, traditional remedies are prescribed to protect the household. Upon witnessing any of these signs, individuals are advised to cleanse themselves by bathing and perform a ritual using a coconut, waving it from head to toe seven times while facing East before breaking it at a temple. Upon returning home, a secondary ritual involving rock salt and mustard seeds placed on a betel leaf, waved three times from head to toe and discarded in an untouched spot, is recommended to fully neutralize the bad luck.
