The Terror of Raman Raghav: How Mumbai’s Most Notorious Serial Killer Was Captured

In the late 1960s, the streets of Mumbai were gripped by absolute terror as an elusive serial killer targeted sleeping pavement and slum dwellers, brutally murdering them in their sleep. The reign of terror finally ended in August 1968 when Inspector Fialho spotted and arrested Raman Raghav, also known as Sindhi Dalwai, during the busy Ganeshotsav festival. Raghav, originally from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, was eventually linked to at least 22 brutal murders that shook the nation.

Raghav’s modus operandi was horrifyingly consistent; he used a heavy steel rod or an axe to smash the heads of his victims, ensuring they died instantly without making a sound. His victims were mostly impoverished citizens, including a school teacher named Hafiz Bhai, a wrestler named Dwarakaprasad Yadav, and a young mother named Shantabhai along with her two toddlers. The police launched a massive manhunt, deploying patrols and eventually creating a composite sketch based on the description provided by a surviving witness, Manjula Devi, which led to his identification.

Following his arrest, Raman Raghav was sentenced to death in August 1969. Although he did not appeal immediately, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment in 1987 after medical evaluations and his own testimony revealed severe mental illness. During his trial, Raghav claimed he committed the murders under the delusion that the Sun God commanded him to do so, bringing a bizarre end to one of India’s most chilling criminal investigations.
