The Malayalam film industry’s star association, AMMA (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists), is facing a severe internal crisis, with President Shweta Menon publicly offering to resign if senior members demand it. This development follows a series of controversies, including a sponsorship deal with middleman TG Nandakumar and allegations of communal slurs within the executive committee.
The roots of the current turmoil trace back to the case against actor Dileep, who was once the backbone of AMMA’s finances and discipline. After Dileep distanced himself from the organization following the case, control shifted to Mohanlal and Mammootty, but their subsequent silence on internal matters has led to a loss of discipline. The latest flashpoint is a sponsorship agreement worth Rs 75 lakh with Nandakumar, which was approved despite opposition from some members. Actress Usha Haseena has also alleged that an executive committee member called her a ‘jihadi’, threatening to reveal the person’s identity at the general body meeting.
Shweta Menon has stated that she is being targeted by certain members within the executive committee and will not step down without a fight. She plans to address all issues at the upcoming general body meeting. Meanwhile, discussions are rife about whether former general secretary Idavela Babu will return to restore discipline, and whether Dileep will make a comeback to the organization.
