Vehicle Modification Rules: What Requires RC Book Changes and What Does Not

Vehicle owners planning to modify their cars or bikes must be aware of the legal boundaries set by transport authorities. While certain major alterations strictly require official updates in the vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) book, several minor aesthetic and functional upgrades can be legally done without any RC modifications.

According to the regulations, major structural and functional changes must be officially recorded in the RC book. These include changing the vehicle’s original color, replacing the engine, installing LPG or CNG kits, converting the vehicle into an electric vehicle (EV), modifying it to be handicap-friendly, or changing the chassis frame. Failing to update the RC for these changes can lead to legal penalties.

On the other hand, several accessories and minor modifications do not require any changes to the RC book. Owners can freely install seat covers, floor mats, steering wheel covers, chrome garnishes, door visors, mud flaps, body stickers, and electronic upgrades like dash cams, reverse cameras, parking sensors, GPS trackers, Android infotainment systems, additional speakers, tire pressure monitoring systems, tow hooks, and roof carriers. However, regarding the use of 50% transparent sun films, while discussions on new guidelines are ongoing, there is still no clear legal confirmation, so motorists must strictly follow current traffic laws.
