Arshina, a woman who endured a nine-year medical ordeal due to a government hospital’s negligence, has finally received justice after the change in Kerala’s government. She had been fighting for compensation and proper treatment since 2017, when a botched cesarean section led to severe health complications that went undiagnosed for years.
Arshina’s struggle began after her third cesarean delivery at a government hospital in Kollam. Despite repeated visits to various hospitals, the cause of her pain remained unknown, leading to financial ruin and mental distress. Her husband’s furniture business collapsed as they spent lakhs on treatments, and she suffered from hormonal imbalances and stress-related illnesses.
In 2024, after the LDF government was replaced, the new administration under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan fulfilled a promise made when he was in opposition. Arshina was offered a job and compensation, which she accepted, saying she received more than she expected. She credited her husband’s unwavering support and the solidarity of the public, who stood by her without regard to politics or religion.
Arshina’s protest, which included a sit-in outside the medical college, was initially dismissed by some as political. However, she maintained that her fight was purely for justice and to prevent others from suffering similar fates. She expressed gratitude to the media and the people who supported her, emphasizing that truth ultimately prevailed.
