Traditional practices emphasize that the timing of daily household cleaning and the proper handling of the broom are deeply connected to a home’s financial prosperity and overall well-being. According to spiritual beliefs, sweeping the home during specific hours of the morning can attract positive energy and the blessings of Goddess Mahalakshmi, while improper cleaning habits can invite adversity and financial distress.
Sweeping the house between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM is considered highly auspicious, offering the complete benefits of the Brahma Muhurtham. Sprinkling turmeric or salt water on Fridays or special occasions during this time further enhances prosperity and helps clear existing debts. While cleaning between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM is also acceptable, sweeping during dusk or night hours is strictly discouraged, as it is believed to drive away positive energy and invite Alakshmi (poverty) into the household, directly affecting the health and livelihood of the family members.
The broom, symbolizing the presence of Mahalakshmi, must be treated with utmost care and stored in a clean, hidden spot away from the sight of visitors. It should never be kept in dirty areas like bathrooms, placed upside down, stepped on, or crossed over. Additionally, using the same broom for both the interior and exterior of the house, using a damaged broom, or borrowing and lending brooms between households are practices that should be avoided to prevent negative energy from multiplying.
