TVK Opposes New Mullaperiyar Dam as Vijay’s Party Escalates Water Dispute

The Mullaperiyar Dam issue has resurfaced as a major political talking point between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), taking a firm stance against Kerala’s proposal for a new dam. In its policy declarations, TVK has made it clear that it will not support the construction of a new dam and instead demands raising the water level to 152 feet, in accordance with the Supreme Court order. This marks a shift from the relatively conciliatory approach maintained by the current DMK government led by MK Stalin.

TVK’s aggressive stance on the issue is seen as a strategic political move to gain a stronger foothold in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu, such as Theni, Madurai, and Cumbum. The party recently saw electoral gains in these areas, winning two out of four seats in the Theni region, where Cumbum MLA Jagannathan Mishra has been actively keeping the Mullaperiyar issue alive. By championing Tamil water rights and pushing for the 152-feet water level, TVK aims to consolidate its political influence ahead of the upcoming assembly elections.

Meanwhile, the Kerala government continues to advocate for a new dam under the principle of “Water for Tamil Nadu, Safety for Kerala.” Kerala has identified potential sites, including one located 1,300 meters away from the existing structure, but constructing a new dam could take 10 to 15 years. While Kerala leaders, including the Water Resources Minister and VD Satheesan, emphasize the need for peaceful dialogue and out-of-court settlements with Tamil Nadu, there is growing concern that TVK’s attempts to politicize the issue could trigger panic among the public and escalate regional tensions.
