How long will the BJP continue to dominate Indian politics? According to renowned pollster and Axis My India founder Pradeep Gupta, the party’s current political supremacy could last at least 20 years — similar to the Congress party’s uninterrupted rule from 1947 to 1977.
In an interview with PTI news agency, Gupta drew parallels between the Congress party’s decades-long dominance and the BJP’s current political trajectory. He noted that Indian politics operates in roughly 20-year cycles, and the BJP, under Narendra Modi’s leadership since 2014, is in the midst of such a cycle.
Gupta emphasized that as long as the ruling party’s governance remains strong and does not significantly weaken, the BJP’s dominant position in Indian politics will continue. However, he also warned that maintaining such dominance requires exceptional performance — not just satisfactory governance.
On the opposition Congress party, Gupta observed that their historical baggage of corruption and poor governance continues to haunt them. He suggested it would take the Congress at least another five years to regain public trust and mount a serious challenge. Even the 2029 general election would mark 15 years of the Congress being out of power at the center.
Gupta also cautioned about the high expectations that come with such overwhelming public mandate. The greater the dominance, the higher the public expectations — and the harder the fall if those expectations are not met.
