Chandy Oommen, the son of former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, has made a startling revelation – he is ready to quit politics after five years. Speaking with visible pain, he said he might leave politics forever, citing the treatment he has received from his own party colleagues.
Unlike what many expected, Chandy Oommen’s electoral performance in Puthuppally was extraordinary. When he first contested the by-election, Congress leaders claimed he won 37,000 votes only due to the sympathy wave following his father’s death. But Chandy proved them wrong by increasing his majority to 57,907 votes in the subsequent election. Those who had criticized him fell silent.
Despite this massive mandate, Chandy Oommen was denied a ministerial position. His own party members ensured he would not become a minister, going against the will of the people of Kerala. The same Congress leaders who had insulted Oommen Chandy in his final days repeated their tactics with his son.
At the swearing-in ceremony of V.D. Satheesan, Chandy Oommen was not even given a chair. He stood in the rain with the public, watching from outside. He walked from his home in Jagathy to the Central Stadium with only a handful of supporters, completely ignored by his own party.
During his election campaign, Chandy did not put up a single poster, flex, or banner. He rode a bicycle, met people face to face, and won on their love. He even used the money saved from campaign expenses to build houses for the poor.
Despite everything, Chandy Oommen insists he holds no grudges. He repeatedly says he has no animosity toward any Congress leader and that his loyalty belongs to the ordinary Congress workers. But the pain in his words is unmistakable – a leader who gave his all, only to be cast aside by his own people.
