Ramesh Chennithala Intervenes to Block Alleged Pinarayi-Satheesan Deal in ED Attack Case

Senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala has reportedly intervened to disrupt an alleged compromise deal between Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan regarding the cases registered over the recent violence against Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials. The state police department has now formed a 30-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Cantonment Assistant Commissioner Jayachandran to conduct a thorough probe into the incident, potentially upsetting the political understanding that sought to shield top CPI(M) leaders.

The controversy stems from the registration of two separate First Information Reports (FIRs) following the protests that erupted when the ED questioned the Chief Minister’s daughter, Veena Vijayan, in the CMRL monthly pay-off case. While ordinary party workers face severe charges, including anti-national activities and rioting, under the ED attack case, prominent CPI(M) leaders present at the scene are being placed under a much weaker FIR for allegedly obstructing police officers. This dual-track prosecution has sparked allegations of a secret deal to allow top leaders to escape easily while leaving grassroots workers stranded in jail without bail.

The situation has also triggered intense discontent within the CPI(M), with local party units like the Kollam Area Committee questioning why ordinary comrades are being sacrificed to protect Veena Vijayan, who holds no official position in the party. Meanwhile, the ED has reportedly submitted a report to the Union Home Ministry, raising the possibility of a National Investigation Agency (NIA) takeover if the newly formed state SIT fails to deliver a satisfactory and unbiased investigation.
