The controversy began when a WhatsApp message surfaced in which a police officer from Vellarikundu station labeled KM Shaji a communalist. The message, shared in the Police Friends group, prompted immediate attention from the district police chief. Chennithala, who oversees the home department as part of the opposition’s responsibilities, coordinated with Shaji to ensure swift action. This move is seen as a strategic play to strengthen the League’s position within the UDF alliance.

Simultaneously, Chennithala pushed for a re-investigation into the assault case involving Pinarayi Vijayan’s gunmen. During the Navakerala Yatra in Alappuzha, the Chief Minister’s security personnel allegedly attacked KSU and Youth Congress workers with batons. Despite a magistrate court ordering a re-investigation in November 2024, the Crime Branch had attempted to close the case. The re-investigation order has now been issued, with a special team taking over the probe.

KM Shaji, in his response to the developments, defended his aggressive political style. When asked about transitioning from a firebrand opposition leader to a responsible administrator, Shaji stated that his aggression is inherent and not a persona he can shed.
