Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials were brutally attacked by a group of CPI(M) workers in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday after conducting a raid at the residence of opposition leader Pinarayi Vijayan. The attack, which took place at Bakery Junction, left three ED vehicles damaged and several officials injured, including the driver who suffered glass splinters in his eye. The assailants used bricks, sticks, and stones to target the officials as they were leaving the premises.
The ED had conducted searches at 12 locations linked to Pinarayi Vijayan, his son-in-law Muhammad Riyas, and Exalogic Solutions, a company owned by Vijayan’s daughter. The agency recovered documents related to investments and bank fixed deposits, which are being analyzed as part of a money laundering case connected to CMRL. Following the raid, CPI(M) workers gathered outside Vijayan’s residence, throwing stones and slippers at CRPF personnel deployed for security. The attackers later sought refuge at the Palayam Area Committee office of the CPI(M), where party leaders including MP John Brittas and former minister V. Sivankutty negotiated with police. After hours of standoff, seven suspects were arrested, and police have identified others involved.
The incident has drawn sharp reactions from the central government, with the Ministry of Home Affairs seeking a detailed report from the DGP and warning of further central forces deployment if needed. The ED has stated that the searches yielded crucial evidence in the money laundering case, and the attack was an attempt to seize the seized documents.
