The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted raids on 12 locations linked to former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, triggering widespread protests by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)]. The CPI(M) initially claimed that the searches were politically motivated and yielded nothing, but the ED later issued a press release stating that crucial documents were seized.
The ED’s press release revealed that details of 242 bank accounts were found, containing a total of Rs 18.36 crore, which have been frozen. Digital devices, including the phone of Vijayan’s daughter, Veena Vijayan, were also seized and sent for forensic examination to recover any deleted evidence. The ED is now focusing on Exalogic, a company owned by Veena Vijayan, which it alleges is a shell company with a capital of just Rs 1 lakh but through which crores were laundered.
The ED’s investigation has been expedited following an attack on its officials during the raids. The agency is now considering questioning and possibly arresting Veena Vijayan, arguing that the protests and violence hindered their search. The CPI(M) has condemned the raids as a political vendetta by the Congress and BJP, but the ED maintains that the evidence points to a shell company used for money laundering.
