The Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted a raid at the residence of Kerala’s Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday, hours after Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi. The raid, which lasted several hours, has been condemned by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) as a politically motivated attack by the BJP-led central government.
CPM state secretariat member and former minister Muhammad Riyas posted on Facebook, saying, “You can attack us from all sides, but we will not bow before the Sangh Parivar. We will fight till our last breath.” This post is seen as a signal that the party is gearing up for a political fight. Earlier, CPM state secretary M.V. Govindan had alleged that the ED investigation into Pinarayi Vijayan’s daughter, Vena Vijayan, was a ploy to target the chief minister.
The CPM central committee also issued a statement, calling the raid a “targeted attack” on Pinarayi Vijayan, the top opposition leader. The party is likely to convene an emergency state secretariat meeting to discuss the situation. The raid comes amid ongoing ED investigations into alleged financial irregularities linked to the Life Mission project and other cases.
