Former Child Artist Krupa Shares Her Journey From Cinema to Academia

Former Malayalam child actress Krupa, best known for her memorable role in Sreenivasan’s classic film Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, has successfully transitioned from the silver screen to a career in academia. The daughter of veteran actress Ramadevi, Krupa chose to prioritize her education over a full-time acting career following her mother’s advice and some challenging experiences in the film industry. Today, she works as a college lecturer and is actively pursuing her doctorate.

Krupa, who acted in around 36 films including 18 as a child artist, initially entered the industry through her father’s encouragement. However, her mother, Ramadevi, advised her to focus on education, knowing that opportunities in cinema are often short-lived. After realizing the wisdom in her mother’s words, Krupa focused on her studies, earning an MA in English Literature, followed by an MPhil and BEd, eventually becoming a college lecturer.

Reflecting on her decision to leave cinema, Krupa also shared a painful experience from her acting career. At the age of 19, she acted in a film about a young girl cheated by an older man, directed by the husband of a famous Malayalam writer. Despite refusing to do exposing scenes during the shoot, the filmmakers later released the movie with added inappropriate scenes she never shot. This incident temporarily cost her a college teaching job when the management denied her employment due to the controversy, but she persevered to build a successful academic career.
