A major accident occurred at Happy Land amusement park in Vembayam, Thiruvananthapuram, when a ride collapsed, injuring over 30 people. At least five of the injured are in critical condition, with head injuries reported. The incident happened during the holiday season when the park sees a large number of visitors, especially school children on educational trips.
Local residents have raised serious allegations against the park management. They claim that the rides are made from second-hand components purchased from amusement parks in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, which had discarded them due to safety concerns. The welding on the collapsed ride is suspected to have failed, leading to the accident. Witnesses also reported that the park lacked adequate ambulance facilities, forcing them to use a van to transport the injured to hospitals.
This is not the first incident at Happy Land. A nine-year-old boy died after falling into the swimming pool a few months ago, but the incident received little media coverage. Residents allege that the park’s management has been operating without proper safety standards, possibly with the connivance of local police and authorities. They demand a thorough investigation into the park’s operations, including the source of its ride components and the previous deaths.
