A 19-year-old woman who arrived at Haripad Taluk Hospital on Monday night with severe abdominal and back pain gave birth in the emergency department’s toilet and threw the newborn out through a window, according to hospital staff. The duty doctor told media that the patient initially claimed she had menstrual pain, leading staff to suspect nothing unusual at first. However, when the doctor noticed her abdomen, they repeatedly asked if she had missed her period, but the girl insisted her periods were regular and denied any other issues.
The doctor further revealed that the girl deliberately misled them by claiming she had previously undergone a scan that showed only fat accumulation in her abdomen, reinforcing her denial of pregnancy. Around 2 a.m. Tuesday, while under observation, the girl went to the toilet and delivered. She then threw the baby girl out through the window without informing anyone. Hospital staff heard the baby’s cries, found her behind the building, and provided immediate first aid. Both mother and baby were referred to Vandanam Medical College Hospital, where they are reported to be out of danger.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The girl, a student in Ernakulam, had not told her family about her pregnancy. Police are probing how she became pregnant and whether she was a victim of any crime. The doctor emphasized that the girl was fully aware of her pregnancy and had made deliberate efforts to conceal it, even asking only for painkillers at the hospital.
