Traditional Indian Vastu Shastra and ancient scriptures emphasize that certain plants and trees should never be grown near residential spaces as they can invite negative energies, financial distress, and family disputes. According to spiritual discourses, planting inauspicious trees like the Thanni (Thandra) tree and the Palm tree near a home can severely disrupt the household’s peace, health, and overall prosperity.
The Thanni tree is believed to act like a magnet for negative energies, which can lead to mental instability, frequent illnesses, and severe financial crises for family members. Similarly, planting a palm tree close to the house is traditionally associated with obstacles in the progress of children and the decline of lineage, as its tall, isolated nature and shadow are said to project negative vibrations onto the household. Other plants to avoid in the immediate vicinity of a house include papaya, mango trees within the compound walls, and thorny desert plants, with the exception of Aloe Vera.
Conversely, scriptures highly recommend cultivating auspicious plants such as Tulsi, Gooseberry (Nelli), Jackfruit (Plavu) near the well, Neem, and Bilva trees. These plants are considered abodes of divine energies, helping to purify the surrounding air, eliminate Vastu doshas, and attract positive vibrations that foster health, wealth, and long life for the residents.
