A public debate has emerged in Kerala following the announcement of a new “Islam-friendly” gym operating on Sharia principles, featuring no music, separate timings for men and women, and specific dress codes. While the owners argue it provides a comfortable fitness environment for those who would otherwise avoid mainstream gyms due to religious reasons, it has sparked intense discussions about social polarization.
During a public call-in program, several citizens expressed strong reservations about branding fitness centers along religious lines. Callers argued that such initiatives could pave the way for “Hindu-friendly” or “Christian-friendly” establishments, ultimately dividing a secular society. Many pointed out that mainstream gyms already offer separate sections or timings for women, making religious branding unnecessary.
Other participants drew comparisons to progressive changes in Gulf nations, noting that even conservative societies are moving forward while Kerala seems to be debating regressive steps. Fitness enthusiasts and retired professionals emphasized that exercise and health maintenance, such as blood sugar control, are universal needs that should remain entirely free from religious segregation.
