The police have resolved the mystery surrounding the discovery of an unexpected second body wrapped in a plastic mat inside a grave at the Infant Jesus Church cemetery in Vaniyappara, Kannur. Authorities clarified that there is no foul play or mystery involved, attributing the confusion to a change in grave numbers during a cemetery renovation.
The incident came to light on the 13th of this month when grave number 38 was opened for a scheduled burial. Inside, along with the coffin, workers discovered what appeared to be another body wrapped in a plastic mat. Since burying bodies wrapped in mats is contrary to Christian customs, the parish priest, Father Gilbert Konnayi, immediately informed the police. The situation quickly went viral on social media after a local resident posted a video, sparking widespread rumors and suspicion.
Following a detailed investigation, the police revealed that burials had taken place in this grave in 2006 and 2015. The body wrapped in the plastic mat is believed to be the one buried in 2015, which was wrapped in a mat after a post-mortem examination. The police verified this by examining photographs from the 2015 funeral service and plan to record statements from the deceased’s family members. The confusion arose because the cemetery was renovated after 2019, leading to the reassignment of grave numbers and discrepancies with the old parish records.
