Kerala CM VD Satheesan Meets PM Modi in First Delhi Visit, Seeks Development Projects

Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan held his first meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi after the new UDF government took office, focusing on key development projects for the state. The 20-minute discussion at the PM’s office in Parliament House centered on high-speed rail, port development, and rehabilitation funds for Wayanad.

Satheesan presented a detailed agenda including an eco-friendly high-speed rail corridor as an alternative to the SilverLine project, seeking clearance from the Railway Ministry. He also requested central support for the second phase of Vizhinjam International Port and modernization of Beypore and Azhikkal ports to strengthen Kerala’s economic base. Additionally, he urged a special central package for the comprehensive rehabilitation of Wayanad, which faced an unprecedented natural disaster.

The Chief Minister also raised concerns about the PM SHRI scheme in education, urging that Kerala’s unique educational model be preserved while implementing the project. He emphasized the need for federal principles and open discussions to enhance trust between the state and central governments.

Beyond the PM meeting, Satheesan met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to discuss the state’s treasury crisis and GST compensation arrears. He is scheduled to meet Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday to expedite disaster relief fund disbursement. The visit marks a strategic shift from the previous Left government’s confrontational approach, aiming to secure central funds through dialogue and proper project submissions.
