Southwest Monsoon Arrives in Kerala as IMD Issues Heavy Rainfall Alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially confirmed the arrival of the southwest monsoon in Kerala. Over the next 24 hours, the monsoon is expected to advance further into more parts of Kerala, Lakshadweep, and parts of Tamil Nadu, triggered by strong monsoon winds and increased moisture from the Arabian Sea.

In response to the heavy rainfall forecast, the IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts across various districts from June 4 to June 8. Authorities have warned of isolated extremely heavy rainfall ranging from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm, accompanied by gusty winds of 40 to 50 km/h. The State Disaster Management Authority has advised fishermen not to venture into the sea and urged the public to avoid night travel in hilly areas and stay clear of waterlogged roads, particularly in low-lying regions like Kochi and Alappuzha. For emergencies, citizens can contact the district control rooms at the helpline number 1077.

While active cyclonic circulations over the Goa coast, Telangana, and the Andaman Sea are currently driving intense rain, the long-term forecast points to a potential deficit. Due to the El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean, the IMD projects this year’s seasonal rainfall between June and September to be only 86% to 94% of the Long Period Average, potentially making it the lowest in a decade. Consequently, states have been advised to prepare for water scarcity and set up cooling shelters to combat expected heatwaves in June.
