Kerala Police Academy to Use Dogs for Cancer Detection with 90% Success Rate

The Kerala Police Academy has announced a pioneering project to train dogs for early cancer detection, citing studies that show a success rate of over 90 percent. The initiative aims to use dogs’ keen sense of smell to identify cancer from breath or urine samples, offering a non-invasive and cost-effective screening method.

The academy has already selected a Belgian Malinois named Laika for the program and plans to add a Labrador Retriever from Calicut University, chosen for its friendly temperament. The training involves teaching dogs to distinguish cancer-specific odors from other scents through multiple stages. Officials believe this approach could help detect cancers at earlier stages, reducing the need for painful biopsies and improving treatment outcomes. The project is inspired by similar programs in Israel, the US, and Europe, and marks the first of its kind in India.
