The Kerala Transport Commission has submitted a set of recommendations to the state government proposing relaxations on certain minor vehicle modifications. While the government has not yet issued an official order, the proposed list of allowable changes has sparked widespread discussion and trolling on social media. This development follows a previous statement by the Chief Minister in a press conference where he assured that the possibility of easing vehicle alteration rules would be examined.
The recommendations suggest permitting basic additions such as seat covers, steering covers, floor mats, door visors, mud flaps, body stickers, tire pressure monitors, and 50% transparent sun film. Social media users have heavily trolled these proposals, pointing out that vehicle owners already use these common accessories. However, experts clarify that under strict existing laws, any alteration from a manufacturer’s original approved specification is technically illegal and can lead to insurance claim rejections or fines during road inspections.
All vehicles in India must strictly adhere to safety standards certified by central agencies like the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) before they are allowed on the road. While the State Transport Authority can encourage safety-related enhancements like GPS and cameras to help analyze accidents, major structural or electrical modifications remain highly restricted to ensure public safety.
