The Enforcement Directorate (ED) raid at former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s rented house in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday took a violent turn when CPM workers attacked the ED vehicle with bricks, smashing its windows. The incident occurred after the ED team completed the search and was returning, raising questions about the party’s response compared to its earlier stance on similar raids.
In 2020, when ED raided the house of Bineesh Kodiyeri, son of former CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, the party maintained a hands-off approach. Then Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had stated that it was a matter for the investigating agency and the family, while Kodiyeri Balakrishnan himself said the party would not interfere in a personal issue. However, during the recent raid on Pinarayi’s daughter Veena’s premises, the CPM immediately mobilized workers, held an emergency secretariat meeting, and launched protests, with state secretary M.V. Govindan even sitting on the road in protest.
Bineesh Kodiyeri was present at the protest and was seen restraining party workers from attacking the ED vehicle, urging them to let the car move forward. In a Facebook post, he sarcastically commented on the ED’s actions, calling the raid on Pinarayi’s house a “sweet revenge” for the party’s earlier indifference to his family’s ordeal. His presence and remarks have sparked debate about the party’s double standards, with many questioning whether the CPM’s response is driven by personal loyalty rather than principle.
