Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has sought a detailed report on the custodial torture of Youth Congress leader V.S. Sujith at the Kunnamkulam police station. The minister directed the Director General of Police to submit the progress report within a week, following public outrage over the incident.
The brutal assault occurred on April 6, 2023, when Sujith, then Mandalam President of Youth Congress, was taken into custody and severely beaten inside the station. CCTV footage of the torture, which emerged in 2025 after a Right to Information application, showed police officers subjecting Sujith to extreme violence, resulting in hearing loss. Five police personnel, including Sub Inspector Nuhman and CPOs Sasindran, Sandeep, and Sajeevan, were initially suspended in September 2025, but the victim and opposition have demanded their dismissal from service. The Home Minister’s intervention comes after years of inaction, with the case now under judicial scrutiny.
