Megha and Salman: Interfaith Marriage, Hijab, and Conversion Debate

Popular Malayalam actors Salmanul and Megha, known for their roles in the serial “Media One,” tied the knot in an interfaith wedding that sparked intense online debate. Megha, who is Hindu, married Salman, who is Muslim, and their wedding photos drew a flood of comments questioning whether Megha had converted to Islam.

Critics pointed out that Megha did not wear a bindi (pottu) at the wedding, interpreting this as a sign of religious conversion. Salmanul addressed these comments directly in an interview, defending his wife and explaining that wearing or not wearing a bindi is a personal choice tied to attire and occasion, not religious identity.

The couple also faced criticism when Megha was seen wearing a hijab (pardah). Salmanul strongly refuted claims that this indicates conversion, stating that clothing choices should not be equated with religious faith. He noted that Megha has worn bindis for her serial roles and traditional attire, and her not wearing one at the wedding was simply a stylistic preference.

Salmanul emphasized that neither he nor his family has pressured Megha to change her religion or clothing style. He expressed frustration over the intolerance behind comments like “she will be put in a sack,” referring to the hijab. He stated that wearing a hijab does not make someone Muslim, and not wearing one does not make someone less Muslim, urging people not to equate fashion choices with religious conversion.

The couple also discussed adjusting to married life, with Megha helping organize Salmanul’s bachelor lifestyle. Despite the significant age difference and religious differences, both families have been supportive. Salmanul made it clear that Megha’s faith and choices remain her own, and any future decisions about clothing or religion will be entirely her personal preference.
