A 54-year-old man, Muhammed Ali (formerly known as Antony), has surrendered to the Vengara police, confessing to two murders he committed nearly four decades ago. Because he was only 14 years old at the time of his first crime in 1986, the legal system will try him as a juvenile, legally referred to as a “child in conflict with law,” despite his current age.
The first murder occurred in November 1986 in Koodaranhi, where Muhammed Ali pushed Mohanan, a native of Iritty, into a stream, leading to his death. The incident was initially dismissed as an accidental drowning of an epileptic person. Following his recent confession, the police launched an intensive investigation, matching old photographs and records to confirm the victim’s identity with the help of Mohanan’s family.
Muhammed Ali also confessed to a second murder committed in September 1989 at Kozhikode Vellayil Beach, where he and a friend allegedly suffocated an unidentified man over a financial dispute. Driven by overwhelming guilt and believing that his eldest son’s death and his second son’s accident were divine punishments, he decided to confess. The police are now preparing a charge sheet under the Juvenile Justice Act for the first crime, as he is currently out on bail.
