Newborn Thrown from Hospital Window in Haripad to Be Taken into Care

A 19-year-old woman who gave birth in a hospital toilet in Haripad, Alappuzha, allegedly threw her newborn baby girl out of a window immediately after delivery. The infant was later rescued from bushes behind the hospital by staff who heard her cries. The Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has decided to take custody of the baby after the mother stated she cannot care for the child.

The woman had come to Haripad Taluk Hospital on Monday night complaining of abdominal pain. Doctors suspected she was pregnant, but she denied it. Around 1 a.m., she delivered the baby in the toilet, cut the umbilical cord herself, and threw the infant out through the window. The baby miraculously survived without injuries and is now in stable condition at Vandanam Medical College Hospital, where the mother is also receiving treatment.

The CWC has granted a two-month waiting period during which the mother can change her mind and reclaim the child. If she does not, the baby will be legally declared free for adoption. Police have registered a case of attempted murder against the woman, who remains under police guard. Authorities are also searching for the father, a migrant worker from another state who had a relationship with the woman in Ernakulam. Meanwhile, the district administration has warned against sharing photos of the baby on social media, as it violates juvenile justice laws.
