Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who now leads the opposition, will receive a monthly salary of approximately ₹97,429, along with cabinet-rank benefits. His basic pay is just ₹2,000, but with dearness allowance of ₹38,420, constituency allowance of ₹4,000, and travel allowance of ₹17,000, the total compensation matches that of a cabinet minister.
Vijayan is entitled to a fully furnished official residence, the Cantonment House in Thiruvananthapuram, with all maintenance, electricity, and water bills paid by the government. He will also have an official vehicle with advanced security features, fuel and driver costs covered by the state. Additionally, he can appoint multiple personal staff including assistants, private secretaries, cooks, drivers, and security personnel, all salaried from government funds.
The opposition leader also receives free phone connections, air and train tickets for official travel, daily special allowances, and full reimbursement for medical expenses for himself and his family, whether treated in India or abroad. This reflects the constitutional importance of a strong opposition, as Vijayan takes on the role while former opposition leader V.D. Satheesan becomes Chief Minister.
