The Kerala government has officially launched the first phase of the “Priyadarshini” scheme, fulfilling its major pre-election promise of providing free public transport bus travel for women. Inaugurated just before the government completes its first month in office, the initiative is designed to offer socio-economic empowerment to women, rather than being viewed as a mere charitable gesture.
The government will allocate approximately 800 crore rupees annually to KSRTC to fund this project, ensuring the state transport corporation does not face additional financial strain. The scheme is expected to significantly benefit working-class women, including fishmongers, domestic workers, students, and daily wage earners, by helping them save a substantial portion of their daily earnings for their families.
Addressing the concerns of private bus operators, the government assured that they are considered an integral part of the public transport system and will receive support to mitigate any losses. The broader vision includes urban planning initiatives to improve public transport and reduce private vehicle congestion in major cities. Highlighting women’s leadership, the inaugural service featured a female driver and conductor, and the scheme’s official order was issued by the newly appointed female Transport Secretary.
