The Kerala government has officially launched its historic free travel scheme for women in KSRTC ordinary buses, marking a significant milestone in women’s empowerment and gender equality. The Transport Minister stated that this landmark initiative is open to all women without any discrimination based on financial status (APL/BPL), age, or state of origin. Passengers can board KSRTC ordinary buses freely without any prior registration or complex procedures.
Highlighting an important operational guideline, the Minister emphasized that all women passengers must mandatorily collect the ‘zero ticket’ from the conductor during their journey. While there is no immediate personal benefit to holding this ticket right now, the Minister hinted that these tickets could bring specific advantages to passengers in the future. Collecting these tickets is also crucial for the government to maintain proper travel data and support KSRTC’s administrative planning.
To expand the reach of this initiative, the transport department is planning to convert several City Fast buses into Ordinary services to increase the overall availability of free rides. The free travel benefits are applicable to ordinary buses, Town-to-Town services, and Gramavandis. Addressing the sharp decline of public transport over the last decade, where active private buses dropped significantly, the Minister reiterated that the government’s ultimate objective is to revive and strengthen the public transportation sector through such progressive measures.
