Following the passing of the veteran Malayalam actor Salim Kumar, discussions arose regarding the absence of traditional post-death rituals during his funeral. However, it has been revealed that his sons, Chandhu and Aromal, were strictly adhering to their father’s explicit final wishes, which rejected superstitious practices and elaborate religious ceremonies. Salim Kumar had prepared his children beforehand, ensuring that his final journey would remain simple and free of orthodox customs.
Salim Kumar, who openly expressed his lack of belief in life after death and organized religion in his later years, had instructed his sons not to perform any pujas or rituals. He specifically requested not to be wrapped in yellow silk (manjappattu), to avoid rituals like bone immersion (asthinimajanam), and not to keep his body on display for long periods to spare his family and the public from unnecessary distress. His son Chandhu ensured these wishes were respected, even requesting the removal of a yellow silk cloth that someone had placed on the body, replacing it with a simple, ordinary cloth.
Throughout his life, Salim Kumar maintained strong personal convictions, emphasizing social responsibility over religious dogmas. He believed that winning a National Award or earning wealth did not give life meaning unless one contributed to society, recalling how he sheltered 45 people in his home during the devastating Kerala floods. Although he had advised his son Chandhu not to cry, the emotional weight of the loss proved too heavy, and both Chandhu and Aromal were seen breaking down in tears, unable to bear the sudden demise of their beloved father.
