Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan made history by becoming the first Chief Minister in 31 years to offer prayers at the Guruvayoor Temple. He followed all the rules set by the Kerala High Court, dispelling allegations of VIP protocol violations.
The visit drew criticism from BJP leaders who alleged that the Chief Minister’s arrival caused inconvenience to ordinary devotees. BJP leader V Gopalakrishnan claimed that the Devaswom authorities provided VIP darshan for Satheesan and his entourage, disrupting regular devotees.
However, the facts tell a different story. According to High Court directives, VIP darshan is not permitted at Guruvayoor on holidays and Sundays after 5 AM. The restriction does not apply in the evening. Satheesan arrived for darshan around 7 AM, a time when VIP darshan is not in effect.
Instead of seeking VIP privileges, the Chief Minister stood in the special queue for neyvilakku (ghee lamp) offerings, just like ordinary devotees. His close associate purchased two tickets worth ₹4,500 legally from the counter. Along with the darshan, he also offered thulabharam as a votive offering.
The last Chief Minister to visit the Guruvayoor Temple was K Karunakaran in 1995 after stepping down as Chief Minister. Since then, Chief Ministers AK Antony, PK Vasudevan Nair, CH Mohammed Koya, EK Nayanar, Oommen Chandy, VS Achuthanandan, and Pinarayi Vijayan did not visit the temple. Communist leaders Nayanar, VS, and Pinarayi Vijayan did not come due to ideological reasons, while Congress chief ministers Antony, Chandy, and CH also refrained, considering temple traditions.
Regarding allegations that Satheesan violated the rule against filming reels inside the temple premises, the footage was actually captured and released by the Guruvayoor Devaswom Board itself, which is appointed by the current LDF government. This was official recording, not a violation. The Devaswom Board alone released those visuals.
While VIP darshan arrangements were set aside for the Chief Minister’s visit, stringent security measures were put in place around the temple premises as per VIP security protocols. On one hand, the Chief Minister set an example by following rules during his visit; on the other hand, complaints arose that the VIP security cordon caused inconvenience to ordinary devotees.
