Satheesan on KSRTC Free Travel for Women and Private Bus Concerns

VD Satheesan, the Leader of Opposition in Kerala, is not one to make decisions that burn his hands. The ongoing debate over KSRTC’s proposed free travel scheme for women showcases this careful approach.

Dr. Mary George, in a detailed discussion, explained that the free travel scheme was a collective UDF election manifesto promise, not a solo decision by Satheesan. However, she highlighted the serious concerns of private bus operators who are already reeling from losses. Over the past 15 years, 25,500 private bus services have been shut down in Kerala, leading to 35,000 job losses. More than half of the passengers on private buses are women, and if KSRTC offers free travel, most of these women would shift to KSRTC, further crippling the private bus sector.

To address this, a card-based system was proposed where only yellow and blue cardholders would be eligible for free travel. This would limit the financial impact on private operators while still fulfilling the promise. The government must also compensate private bus owners for verified losses rather than encouraging false claims.

Satheesan, the discussion notes, is a leader who ensures his promises translate into reality. His election manifesto commitments have consistently materialized into tangible outcomes. The free travel scheme is part of a broader UDF vision to empower women in Kerala, who despite high literacy rates, continue to face marginalization. With proper fiscal management, the government can generate the resources needed to fund such welfare schemes without burning anyone’s hands.
