Shanimol Usman Elected as Kerala Assembly Deputy Speaker Amid Missing Votes Controversy

Shanimol Usman has been elected as the fourth female Deputy Speaker of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, securing 99 votes in the election. Her opponent, Muhammed Muhassin of the CPI(M), received 34 votes. The election process sparked discussions in the assembly due to four missing votes, including that of the Speaker who abstained from voting.

Out of the missing votes, three are believed to belong to the BJP MLAs who abstained from the election process. Meanwhile, with the CPI(M) having 35 MLAs, the opposition is questioning where one of their votes went, as Muhassin only secured 34 votes. Following the official announcement by Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Shanimol Usman took her designated seat next to the Leader of the Opposition, Pinarayi Vijayan, after exchanging greetings.

Shanimol Usman’s election marks the first time in over three and a half decades that a woman has been appointed to the post of Deputy Speaker in the Kerala Assembly. She has previously served in several key roles, including KSU State Vice President, Kerala University Senate member, AICC Secretary, and Alappuzha Municipal Chairperson, and was elected to the 14th Kerala Assembly from the Aroor constituency in a by-election.
