Youth Congress leaders in Kannur stormed a cooperative bank on Wednesday, accusing CPM-controlled banks of deliberately withholding welfare pension payments to create a false narrative against the state government. The protest came after the government released pensions on the 25th of the month, ahead of Eid, but several banks under CPM management failed to disburse the funds.
According to Youth Congress leaders, the government had issued a circular on the 25th directing all financial institutions to disburse pensions promptly. While many banks, including those under Congress management, completed distribution on the 25th and 26th, some CPM-run banks intentionally delayed the process. The leaders alleged that this was a ploy to blame the government for denying pension during the festival.
During the protest, the Youth Congress met with the Joint Registrar, who confirmed that the government had indeed released the funds. The registrar assured that the pending pensions would be cleared by the end of the day. Based on this assurance, the Youth Congress called off their demonstration but warned that they would continue to monitor the situation and take action against any further delays.
