A 19-year-old woman who gave birth in a hospital toilet in Haripad and threw her newborn out a window has told police she was unaware of her pregnancy, believing her weight gain was due to fat accumulation. The incident occurred on Monday night at the Haripad Taluk Hospital, where she had gone for treatment of severe abdominal pain.

The woman, who had been working in Ernakulam and living with her family for the past three months, claimed she had a relationship with a migrant worker but had no contact with him recently. Her mother is undergoing long-term treatment for severe mental illness, and neither her father nor younger sister noticed her pregnancy. The baby, weighing 2.9 kg, was found crying behind the toilet by hospital staff and is in good health. The mother has been booked for attempted murder and is under police observation at Vandanam Medical College Hospital. She has reportedly told child welfare authorities she does not want the baby, who will be placed in a children’s home in Alappuzha after her discharge.
