Akhil Marar’s wife opens up about her painful past—a journey through an abusive marriage, the struggle to break free, and ultimately finding happiness and independence.
She reveals how she endured domestic violence and tried everything to make her marriage work. “I tried different ways for some days, but then I realized I had to get out of this loop. I couldn’t tolerate it anymore. I had to leave because my life was at stake,” she shares.
When she tried to call the police, no one answered. She then called her brother, but even his phone went unanswered during those early morning hours. Living with an alcoholic and abusive person, her only safe place was the bathroom.
Despite working as a social worker herself, she didn’t know how to escape her own situation. “I worked on many women’s issues as a social worker, yet I didn’t know how to get out of it myself,” she admits.
Fear held her back—fear of how society would judge her, how her parents would react, how the family would cope with a divorce. No one in her family had ever been divorced. The fear of facing society as a single woman, the worry about what people would say, kept her trapped for years.
But everything changed when she started traveling alone. “My first solo trip made me bold and independent,” she says. She found her strength through small daily victories. “Every day we face problems—big or small. When we find a solution, that’s a success. Success for me isn’t about bank balance; it’s about being able to solve my problems every day.”
She also found support from friends who became her true family. “We don’t have to be blood-related to be family. My friends, my sisters—they were there for me when I needed them most.”
Now, with Akhil Marar by her side, she has found the happiness she always deserved. “Freedom to take decisions, freedom to be myself—that’s the real success.”
