A 19-year-old mother who threw her newborn baby out of a hospital toilet window in Alappuzha has experienced a change of heart and is now demanding custody of the child. Initially refusing to accept the baby, she expressed her desire to keep the infant when Child Welfare Committee (CWC) officials arrived at the Vandanam Medical College to take custody.
However, officials face significant technical and safety hurdles in handing the baby back to a mother who attempted to kill it immediately after birth. Consequently, the CWC has temporarily transferred the infant to the Shishu Vikas Bhavan, an approved adoption and care center under the State Child Welfare Committee. CWC Chairperson Adv. B. Geetha stated that any decision to return the child will only be made after reviewing the police report.
The shocking incident occurred at the Haripad Government Hospital, where the teenager had arrived complaining of stomach pain, only to discover she was pregnant. She subsequently gave birth in the hospital toilet and threw the newborn out of the window. Hospital staff rescued the baby after hearing its cries. The Haripad police have registered an attempt-to-murder case against the mother, and her statement will be officially recorded once she is discharged from the hospital.
