High drama unfolded in Alappuzha during the evidence collection in the brutal murder case of 80-year-old Thankamma, whose body was found bound and tied to a heavy stone in a lake. The police brought the accused, 54-year-old neighbor Prakashan, to the victim’s house in Kanakakkunnu, where local residents and the victim’s grieving family gathered in large numbers.
During the police proceedings, Thankamma’s son emotionally confronted Prakashan, screaming, “Why did you kill my mother?” The police officers’ response—pushing the grieving son away and aggressively shouting at him to move aside—has sparked widespread public outrage and severe criticism on social media. Local women also gathered at the scene, expressing deep anger over the cruelty of the crime, questioning why the suspect was being shielded, and demanding justice for the elderly woman who lived alone.
According to the police, Prakashan murdered Thankamma on Sunday night to steal her gold ornaments to settle his mounting debts. He had noticed her jewelry earlier that day while helping her carry a cooking gas cylinder inside her house. The investigation team zeroed in on Prakashan after noticing that the unique knot and rope used to tie the stone to the victim’s body matched the specialized fishing ropes found at his house, coupled with suspicious details about him suddenly clearing his outstanding debts.
