Alappuzha Wonder Falls Water Contaminated with Human Waste, Tests Reveal High Coliform Levels

A shocking report has revealed that the water used in the popular “Wonder Falls” artificial waterfall at the Alappuzha beach carnival was heavily contaminated with human waste. Laboratory tests on water samples collected from the site confirmed extremely high levels of coliform bacteria, posing severe health risks to thousands of visitors who used the attraction during the summer vacation.

The investigation, led by Dr. Padmakumar of the International Research Center for Lake Ecosystems, Alappuzha, found over 1,000 coliform bacteria per 100 ml of water. This dangerous contamination occurred because crude pit toilets were constructed just three meters away from the borewells dug to pump groundwater for the waterfall. Due to the sandy nature of the beach, the toilet waste easily seeped into the groundwater source.

Many visitors, including children, who bathed in the waterfall reported health issues such as skin itching and eye irritation, with several seeking medical treatment. Following the revelations, Ambalappuzha MLA G. Sudhakaran has urged the District Collector to launch a comprehensive investigation into the environmental pollution and suspected tax evasion by the organizers, who allegedly paid only minimal taxes to the municipality despite massive ticket sales.
