Massive Natural Gas Reserves Discovered Near Andaman Islands

Oil India Limited has discovered massive natural gas reserves off the coast of the Andaman Islands. This significant milestone was achieved under the “Samudramanthan Mission,” India’s deep-sea exploration initiative. Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, officially announced the breakthrough, highlighting it as a major step forward for India’s energy security.

The gas reserves were located at the Srivijayapuram-3 exploration well, situated approximately 15 kilometers off the eastern coast of the Andaman Islands. The drilling was executed at a depth of over 1,900 meters below sea level, in an area where the ocean depth is 355 meters. Out of three wells drilled by Oil India Limited in the Andaman Basin, two have successfully indicated the presence of hydrocarbons.

This energy discovery comes alongside strong economic indicators for India. Despite global tensions and weak international trade, the Indian economy recorded a robust GDP growth of 7.8% in the final quarter of the last fiscal year, bringing the overall growth for the financial year to 7.7%, driven by strong domestic demand and growth in services, construction, and real estate sectors.
