85-Year-Old Man Sentenced to Prison in 34-Year-Old Case in Bihar

A local court in Bihar’s Vaishali district has sentenced an 85-year-old man, Deep Rai, to three years of rigorous imprisonment in a 34-year-old attempt to murder case. Considering his extreme old age and physical frailty, Additional Sessions Judge Manoj Kumar Tiwari granted him temporary bail to appeal in a higher court. Meanwhile, the other four co-accused in the case—Lokeshwar Rai, Suresh Rai, Udakeshwar Rai, and Jagdish Rai—were sentenced to ten years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 25,000 each.

The incident dates back to December 10, 1992, in Raghavpur village, Bihar. A dispute arose over glass shards scattered on a public road, which quickly escalated into violence. The accused arrived with country-made pistols and opened fire on the villagers, leaving four people, including a woman, seriously injured. Deep Rai, who was 51 years old at the time, was identified by the court as the person who instigated the shooting.

The case highlights severe delays in the Indian judicial system, with the charge sheet filed in 1993 but charges officially framed only in 2011. During the prolonged trial, four other accused passed away. A video of the physically weak elderly man being supported by two people as he left the court premises has gone viral on social media, sparking nationwide debate. Senior Supreme Court advocate Indira Jaising criticized the delay on social media, urging the Chief Justice to release him on humanitarian grounds, noting that no amount of money can compensate for lost freedom.
