Bindhu Krishna: From Tea Stall to Minister - A Story of Perseverance

Advocate Bindhu Krishna’s journey from a tea stall assistant to a minister in the Kerala cabinet is a remarkable story of grit, determination, and political perseverance. Born on May 24, 1972, in Chathannoor, Kollam, her early life was marked by hardship when her mother’s illness and subsequent surgery plunged the family into financial crisis.

While her father ran a small tea shop to keep the family afloat, a young Bindhu balanced school with washing dishes and serving tea. Even as she rose through the ranks of the Kerala Students Union (KSU) in college, she never took a single day off from helping at the family shop.

Bindhu Krishna’s political career was anything but easy. She contested her first assembly election in 2011 from Chathannoor but lost. In 2014, she ran as the Congress candidate from Attingal for the Lok Sabha but was defeated by CPM veteran A. Sampath. Her third consecutive defeat came in the 2021 assembly elections when she lost to actor-turned-politician M. Mukesh by a narrow margin of just over 2,000 votes.

Despite three back-to-back electoral defeats, Bindhu Krishna refused to give up. Instead of leaving the constituency, she stayed in Kollam, working tirelessly among the people. When she first took charge of the Kollam DCC office, there was not even a chair to sit on. Through sheer hard work, she transformed the rundown office into a grand party headquarters.

Her persistence paid off in the 2026 assembly elections. Riding the strong UDF wave across the state and backed by the deep personal connections she had built over five years, Bindhu Krishna won the Kollam seat by a massive margin of 18,030 votes. Her victory was a powerful endorsement of her organisational skills and grassroots connect.

From washing teacups to taking the oath as a minister, Bindhu Krishna’s story is an inspiration for every ordinary worker in democratic politics. Her rise proves that perseverance in the face of repeated failure can ultimately lead to triumph.
