BJP Files Police Complaint Against Islamic Sharia Compliant Gym in Palakkad

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has filed a police complaint against a gym in Pudunagaram, Palakkad, following social media promotions claiming that the establishment will now operate strictly under Islamic Sharia principles. BJP Palakkad District President Prasanth Sivan submitted the complaint to the District Police Superintendent, demanding an immediate investigation and registration of a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The BJP argues that introducing religious restrictions and segregation in public commercial spaces could lead to communal polarization and law and order issues.

The controversy erupted after a promotional video of the recently renovated ASB Gym, which has been operating for 15 years, was shared on Instagram. According to the gym’s owner, Navas Muthuitty, the facility will enforce rules such as a ban on music, separate workout timings for men and women, a strict dress code covering the ‘Awrah’ (body parts required to be covered under Islamic law), and restrictions on casual conversations. The owner clarified that the gym is not run solely for profit and welcomes people of all faiths as long as they are willing to adhere to these guidelines.

Senior BJP leader Rajeev Chandrasekhar strongly condemned the development on social media, warning that such moves lead to the creation of pockets with extreme Islamist views, running contrary to the laws and constitution of the country. He accused the political leadership of enabling the “Talibanization” of certain areas in Kerala through appeasement politics and urged the state leadership to take immediate action to curb such subversive activities before the situation escalates.
