How a BTech Graduate Turned Sugarcane Farming into a Successful Jaggery Business

Manu Mathew, a BTech graduate from Pala, Kerala, has successfully transformed sugarcane cultivation and traditional jaggery production into a thriving, modern enterprise. Located at Nellappara on the Pala-Thodupuzha road, his venture offers live jaggery processing where visitors can watch the production and buy fresh, warm jaggery directly.

After his plans to move abroad were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Manu decided to revive sugarcane farming, a crop historically grown in the Pala region. Despite initial skepticism from others and early financial struggles, he studied farming techniques from neighboring states like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to make his venture profitable.

Today, his brand produces various jaggery products, including spiced jaggery, jaggery powder, liquid syrup (Paani), and a jam-like semi-liquid jaggery (Pathiyan). With products shipped nationwide via post and courier, Manu now aims to establish Kerala’s largest jaggery mill to manufacture over a hundred diverse jaggery-based products.
