Cherian Philip Reveals Health Condition Amid Hug Controversy

Senior Congress leader Cherian Philip has come forward with a detailed explanation and personal health revelation following widespread criticism over a video showing him attempting to hug newly-elected Kollam MLA Bindu Krishna at the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.

In a Facebook post, Philip apologized saying he got carried away in the election victory celebration and hugged all Congress MLAs — both men and women — without distinction in front of cameras and journalists at Indira Bhavan. He sought public forgiveness if his actions caused any discomfort.

The 71-year-old leader then made a startling revelation about his health. He disclosed that five decades ago, due to political persecution, he suffered an injury to his spine and spinal cord. Over time, this led to the degeneration of the nervous system below his waist. The muscles in his legs have atrophied, and he is able to stand and walk only through continuous medical treatment.

Philip expressed deep anguish over being portrayed as a “womanizer” on social media following the incident. He said the allegations have left him mentally shattered and caused sleeplessness for days. He thanked those who stood by him during the controversy.

Mahila Congress president Jebi Mather had earlier defended Philip, stating his gesture was purely fraternal. Both Bindu Krishna and Shanimol Usman also reportedly said they saw no ill intent in his behavior.

The incident occurred during the Congress Legislature Party meeting held to discuss the selection of the next Chief Minister of Kerala after the UDF’s victory in the assembly elections.
