Dr. Ajith Kumar Removes 5cm Wooden Pieces from Patient’s Leg at Nedumangad Hospital

A team of doctors at Nedumangad District Hospital successfully removed large wooden fragments measuring 5cm in length and 3cm in width from a patient’s leg, highlighting both a medical negligence case and the expertise available at government district hospitals.

The patient, 57-year-old V. Madhu from Pangode, Bharathannoor, had fallen from a tree on March 21st and injured his left leg. He first sought treatment at a private hospital and then at the Medical College Hospital, where doctors took X-rays, applied stitches, and discharged him after three days with instructions for regular dressing at a local hospital.

However, for over a month, whenever the dressing was changed at Nellikkunnu Government Hospital, pus continued to discharge from the wound. The treating doctor there eventually referred him to an orthopedic specialist. On April 14th, Madhu consulted Dr. V.S. Ajith Kumar, the orthopedic head at Nedumangad District Hospital.

Dr. Ajith Kumar admitted him and after a course of antibiotics, performed surgery on April 25th. During the operation, the surgical team discovered and removed large wooden fragments that had been lodged in the wound for two months. The pieces had been causing persistent infection and pus discharge.

The surgery was performed by Dr. Ajith Kumar along with Dr. B.A. Firoz, Dr. Nitin Sharan, and their team. The procedure took about one and a half to two hours due to complications from the two-month-old foreign bodies.

This case highlights a treatment failure at the Medical College level, where the wooden fragments were missed during initial examination. However, it also demonstrates that skilled doctors and quality treatment are available at government district hospitals, challenging the prevailing notion that government hospital doctors do not provide proper care.
